Therapy through our Marriage Care Clinic helps couples develop understanding, insight and compassion for themselves as well as their partner. We work with couples to understand the patterns and themes that may create dances of distance, conflict, or parallel existence. Our Marriage Care Clinic also provides education, assessment, resources and support to individuals and groups in the community.
Philosophy
Our Marriage Care Therapists are committed to:
A pro-marriage stance
Taking an active role in marital therapy
Helping couples move from an idealized model of marriage to a more mutually defined model
Honoring both people in the relationship
Holding each person accountable towards the goals of the marriage
Viewing the current relationship within the context of each person's family history
Encouraging individual growth within the relationship.
Assessment
The purpose of a marriage assessment is to help couples evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of their relationship. This is done via personal interviews, questionnaires, and inventories. Particular attention is paid to other mental health concerns, such as depression, anxiety, chemical dependency, adult ADD, etc., that may be negatively impacting the relationship. The result is a blueprint of the marriage which becomes the context for marital therapy.
In addition, we do pre-marital assessments. Some couples choosing to marry or to re-marry wish to assess their relationship prior to marriage.
Marital Therapy
The focus of the work is on increasing three key relational skills: empathy, reciprocity, and accountability. A primary emphasis of the couple's work is to understand patterns and themes that have created a dance of distance, conflict or parallel existence. We help couples develop understanding, insight and compassion for their own personal stories and how they impact the marriage.
Using current marital research, we help couples move from an idealized view of marriage to a more mutually defined and realistic model.
Marriage Care Groups
A Marriage Care Group is a self-directed group of couples that meets on a monthly basis to focus on building healthier marriages. The group is comprised of 5-7 couples who make a one year commitment to participate.
A typical two hour meeting might look like this:
20 minute check-in time
20 minute informal marriage enrichment topic presented by the host couple
30 minute private couple dialogue/homework time
50 minute large group discussion of topic followed by a light dessert and social time
A Marriage Care Group is not a therapy group. It is not meant for couples who need significant resolution of persistent problems. These groups are a form of enrichment meant to provide accountability towards maintaining a vibrant, intentional relationship in a very demanding world.
The Marriage Care Clinic of Lakewood is available to help you jump-start your group. We'll conduct the first meeting and remain available for consultation as needed.
Educational Opportunities
Educational opportunities are available for couples seeking to learn, integrate, and enrich the satisfaction of their existing or future marriages.
Workshops can be designed for 1-2 hour singe-topic presentations or half or full day experiences. All presentations include educational information along with experiential skill-building activities. Couples will leave with one or more "tools" that have the power to improve their marriage.
Educational opportunities include seminars on a variety of topics. A sampling is listed below:
Developing a Mission Statement for Your Marriage - creating a mutually defined model of marriage
His Story/Her Story - the influence of our birth families on our marriages
Fighting For Your Marriage - communication and conflict resolution
